Time for a little something new from the deep recesses of the local Costco. A huge fucking bag of kale.
This would, under normal circumstances, be way too much kale. I mean, I like kale. But I like it CSA style - one bunch every couple of weeks or so. Or, in the off season, buying a bunch for a specific dish like calo verde.
This, however, is a pound and a half of kale. A pound and a half doesn't seem like a lot when it's, say, in butter form, but a pound and a half of kale is a bag the size of a small torso. But there are a couple of upsides.
First, it's Earthbound Farms Organic, one of the larger purveyors of fancy greens in plastic bags. And second, and more importantly, it's mixed baby kale.
Mixed. Which means there's a few different varieties in there. And baby, which means there's no stemming. Basically, this is the kale version of bagged spinach. You can toss some with lettuce in a salad, or just keep it in your fridge and add handfuls of it to a dish to give it some more leafy grenth.
I've used it twice so far, once in a mixed vegetable pasta alongside spinach, and once by itself in an Asian-style soup. Both times it's been very nice - a bit of wilted, dark green along with other vegetables. It's super-convenient in that same way bagged spinach is.
And it's probably good for you, too, although I'm wary of the kind of "superfood" promotional pimping that Earthbound Farms ins't even remotely wary of. The packaging makes me want to cook up a bunch of it with a little bacon just to balance it out. Well, that, and pork with greens is classic on account of it being delicious.
