Fickle Fork of Fate

The Such A Holy Shit Farm Week I Took Pictures

Normally this would have been up three hours ago, but you all have got to see this. Plus, Ruhlman is soliciting pictures of CSA boxes over at his blog and this was a hell of a box to take a picture of, so what the hell. I'll save the big reveal for the end. First the most ordinary stuff:

For the ordinary stuff, this is pretty damn good.

Leaf lettuce, four roma tomatoes, two cucumbers, one onion, one more head of garlic, one slightly dented squat and very dense eggplant. All very useful.

Three weeks straight of edamame and watermelon, and I'm fine with that.

A big bag of basil, which is good, because I never actually got back to the farmer's market to make more frozen pesto. More edamame. Fresh beans. Two tiny pattypan squashes that got the butter-and-quinoa treatment for dinner tonight. And another watermelon, which means there are two in the fridge.

No, really. A bottle of sunflower oil that they made from their own sunflowers. I mean, DAMN.

This is, first but not foremost, an epic shitload of peppers. On the left are all poblanos. Right top jalapenos. Right bottom various varieties of orange, yellow, and red sweets.

Oh, and that thing on the right was in the box too. A five ounce bottle of Driftless Organics sunflower oil. Sunflower oil in a CSA box. My mind has actually been completely boggled like this since the e-mail came on Monday saying it was gonna be in there, but I wanted to wait until it arrived. It's unrefined, and the first third to half of it worked very, very, very nicely as the basis of a mostly basil, bit of tarragon, bit of lemon zest blended herb oil that got drizzled on pan-seared sockeye as the rest of tonight's dinner.

If they were trying to ensure my repeat business next year, well call me easily wooed, but they've succeeded. And I think they've won at least one other customer just from watching what I've been getting.

They won a customer just from

They won a customer just from you announcing you were gonna give them a shot back in March.

Well...

...I hope you're enjoying them as much as I am this year.

Ugh - those giant eggplants

Ugh - those giant eggplants are so disgustingly bitter. Ever since I tasted a much sweeter, much less bitter asian eggplant (the long, thin light violet ones) I haven't touched the larger varieties since.
