Fickle Fork of Fate

WBTC: Italian Beef

An approximation horked via Google Image Search. Pretty close, although my peppers were small-diced.The Italian Beef sandwich is one of those Chicago things. I didn't seek one out while I was in Chicago, because I had more interesting fare in mind, but destiny put one in my hands anyway.

Various shifts in plans put us in the Shedd Aquarium at lunchtime, standing literally in front of the Shedd Aquarium cafeteria. And as I perused the very museum/zoo/aquarium cafeteria-type items on the menu, I saw they had an Italian Beef sandwich. As well they should. So I ordered it.

If you don't know, an unfortunately-initialed IBS consists of three main compoents. A long, squishy, white Italian sandwich bun. A giant pile of roast beef that's been floating in a tub of seasoned beef juice/broth/gravy for presumably a very long time, and a topping of lightly pickled onions and/or hot peppers.

The idea is that the broth/juice from the beef soaks into the squishy bun, like a predipped French Dip. And that's certainly what happened. I can't vouch for the authenticity you get out of an aquarium food service, but it was a perfectly decent lunch. Beefy and drippy and a bit spicy and quite filling. Plus the goo dripped all over the fries and made them better.

As far as authenticity goes,

As far as authenticity goes, there are certainly many better places to get a great Italian Beef (especially with the hot giardiniera). But I'm glad you had a chance to try it while here. Great, now I'm going to have to have one for dinner...

Aquarium cafeterias

Clearly, institutional food courts are not destination restaurants, except when they are (mainly at art museums,) but I'm always glad when they at least make the necessary refueling for their captive audience pleasant. (I'm looking at you, Field Museum.)

I must say that the Shedd food court 1. has improved greatly in selection and price (and wallpaper) since my last visit in 2007 and 2. is the current front-runner in my personal best museum/zoo/aquarium food court competition.

I had felafel. Felafel! It was even good felafel, with fries and a refillable drink, for $5.99. A veggie burger with cheese and fries and a 20-oz. bottled soda at the Aquarium of the Pacific this February cost me $12, and a Pizza Hut personal pan pizza (cheese) combo at Shedd in 2007 cost $7.99. I remember sitting there, exhausted and hungry, resenting my lunch.

There were no astonishing feats of gourmandery, but they had a wide menu with interesting stuff, beyond burgers, and it tasted good, and it was cheap, and some of it was even healthy. It sounds basic and simple and to be expected, but trust me - that's unusual.

And by the way, ReCaptcha for Shedd - "that Atlantis"
