OK, I will give them this. Despite analogies that border on a Parrothead spring break kind of deal, City Pages' Hot Dish blog wasn't fucking kidding about the ceviche at La Sirena Gorda.
I don't eat at La Sirena Gorda as much as I should, because I don't get to the Midtown Global Market as much as I should, and when I'm in the Midtown Global Market, I've got Manny's Tortas and the glorious huarachazo competing for my attention just in the Mexican food sphere. It's always been good when I have had it, but I'd never tried the ceviche.
I was planning to hit the MGM today anyway, because I needed bacon and honey, so when I read City Pages' blurb, I figured I'd give it a try, assuming the place wasn't swamped with similarly-minded folks. It wasn't, which was good for me, but bad for all those folks, because it started good and just got better.
First, I just ate a forkful of fish, vegetables, and a bit of avocado, and it was good. Bright and clean, lots of citrus and herb. Very nice.
Then I scooped the same thing onto one of the tortilla chips, and had my first holy shit moment, because if I could buy these tortilla chips in a bag, I'd never buy any others. Super-thick and crunchy and corntastic, and really set off the fish nicely.
Oh, but then I got down to where I could pick up the tostadas (it comes in a one- or two- tostada portion, for $6 and $9 respectively, I think the $9 is well worth it) and oh man. Got that chipotle aioli working, the spice level building up, and if the tortilla chips were great, the tostada was even better. Really crispy even after sitting under fish and dressing and mayo and such.
All this, of course, really pises me off. Because now there at least three must-have dishes on those rare occasions I make the drive all the way down Lake Street. Fucking delicious food.
