I haven't cooked all fucking week.
OK, I threw together a pot of Fridgeclearing Soup on Tuesday, but that doesn't really count. Wednesday was leftovers, Friday we went out. I cooked tonight, and set off the building fire alarm for the first time ever (first time it was my fault, I mean), but that's a story for an upcoming post.
And Thursday, I bought me a new TV. From Costco. And when we got back, I had some chicken flautas, which are by far my favorite of all the evil prepared foods one can buy from Costco.
I do, as a general rule, keep a very small selection of frozen or frozenesque prepared foods on hand in case of food emergencies. Sometimes it's Pizza Rolls, which should probably never, ever be a dinner, but which are, occasionally. Sometimes it's something from the ample Trader Joe's assortment. But more often than not, it's these flautas, because they are addictive to an almost disturbing degree.
Also, not only do eight of them make a very satisfying meal for two (really, six of them would, but they're good enough that the last two get eaten like Pop Tarts in a Paula Poundstone sketch), but eight of them makes up one of the two joined containers, and eight of them fit perfectly onto one of my small sheet pans. These kinds of ergonomic issues are often overlooked when it comes to conveience foods. For example, as much as I adore the mini beef tacos from Trader Joe's, good luck arranging a full box of them onto a small cookie sheet. There simply isn't the room, because the semicircle is a bitch to stack.
They aren't too spicy, but have a decent amount of flavor. While they are processed and evil, within the subgenere of processed evil there have been much worse throughout history. They crisp up nicely in the oven, you can dip them in stuff like leftover semi-failed enchilada sauce or homemade guacamole, and, along with juice and milk, are an important part of a balanced breakfast.
